China’s Zhangzhou NPP in Fujian province has installed the second steel liner module for the unit 4 reactor and the fifth steel liner model for the unit 3 reactor, laying a solid foundation for subsequent steel liner module construction and main equipment installation.

The second steel liner module for unit 4 weighs 142.7 tonnes with total hoisting weight of 253.6 tonnes. It has an inner diameter of approximately 46.8 metres. The inner diameter of the fifth steel liner model for the unit 3 is a similar length. Its total height is about 9.78 metres and overall hoisting weight is about 235 tonnes.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has stressed the importance of experience feedback, scientifically optimised construction schedules and resource allocation, and ensured a smooth, safe and high-quality heavy-lifting operation in terms of material inspection, workshop prefabrication, on-site assembly, and module hoisting.

Zhangzhou unit 1 – the first of six Hualong One (HPR1000) reactors – began commercial operation in January. Units 1&2 began construction in 2019 and 2020. First concrete was poured for unit 3 in February – the first of two Hualong One units planned as the second phase of the plant. In September, first concrete was poured for the nuclear island of Zhangzhou unit 4. Two more Hualong One units are planned for the third phase.
