Both nuclear reactors at Dominion Virginia Power’s Surry County nuclear palnt in Virginia have been closed following water leaks.

Unit 1 was taken offline for planned maintenance to repair seals on one of the three reactor coolant pumps, spokesman Rick Zuercher said.

Unit 2 was deactivated after failed attempts to repair a spray valve that is part of its coolant system.

The leaks amounted to about 1000 gallons, all of which was captured and processed for reuse once the reactors restart, Zuercher said. Each reactor’s coolant system operates with about 71,000 gallons of water.

The two triple-loop 800MWe Westinghouse pressurised water reactors went on-line in 1972 and 1973.
