The government should take immediate action to deal with all forms of radioactive waste, according to a report published by the Royal Society’s working group on radioactive waste.
The report suggests that decisions on building new nuclear power plants in the UK need not necessarily be delayed until an acceptable solution for managing existing waste is decided. Any proposals to build a new reactor should be accompanied by plans to dispose of the waste it will generate, the group suggests. The Royal Society also supports a government recommendation that an independent nuclear waste management commission should be established to determine how the public wants waste disposed of in the long-term, and to provide technical advice to the government.
