Seeking to allay Austrian fears about the safety of the Temelin plant in the Czech Republic, the station’s operator CEZ has launched an internet site that includes live transmissions from the facility’s control room, reports the Associated Press. The site also provides information on the station’s technology. It is in Czech and German.
In an address to Austrians, the Director General of CEZ, Jaroslav Mil, said: “Temelin is a modern and safe power plant. I don’t share your worries but I try to understand them because I know that your politicians and media tell you they don’t have enough information. But the information exists.” Austria voted against using nuclear energy in 1978 and remains vehemently opposed to it.
Temelin was started in 1980. Westinghouse has since upgraded the Russian-designed plant to meet European standards. It has now begun start-up.
