Russian fuel company TVEL has signed a long-term contract with Ukrainian plant operator NNEGC Energoatom for the supply of fresh nuclear fuel to Ukrainian nuclear power plants after 2010.
The document was signed in Kiev on 1 June by the president of the Energoatom Yuri Nedashkovskiy and the president of JSC TVEL Yuri Olenin. The parties noted on the mutual benefit of the signed contract, which follows a decision made at the sixth meeting of the Committee on Economic Cooperation of the Russian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission on 30 April.
The cooperation between JSC TVEL and Ukraine began in 1996, when TVEL won the international tender for supplying nuclear fuel to Ukrainian VVER reactors. In 1997, a contract was signed for the supply of fuel unti 2010.
Ukraine has fifteen operating reactors, which as of March 2010 had generated some 1700TWh of electricity over their operating lifetimes.
