The TWI (The Welding Institute) Innovation Network on 8 January announced the launch of its latest Innovation Centre in collaboration with UK’s London South Bank University. The network coordinates partnerships for the acceleration of research and development for industry, bringing together expertise to progress engineering advances in specialist areas across a range of industry sectors. This is the third Innovation Centre formed by TWI alongside London South Bank University and the ninth TWI Innovation Centre overall.
TWI was stablished in Cambridge, UK in 1946. It has 800 employees, and works with over 1,800 Industrial Member companies in over 70 countries. Its international Training and Examinations programme sees around 25,000 students trained each year in welding and inspection technologies.
In December, TWI announced that it was offering specialist assistance to contractor and Industrial Member company, Darchem Engineering Ltd, which has just won a contract at Hinkley Point C. The fabrication contract involves material procurement, welding, fabrication and testing. TWI said it had assisted Darchem through the tendering stage and this has continued into the first phase of the contract, when a significant volume of documentation had to be prepared and submitted for approval before production could commence. As a TWI Industrial Member, Darchem continue to have access and support on welding, quality assurance, quality control and non-destructive testing throughout the project, especially as this enters the manufacturing phase.
