The South Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy has approved plans to construct two new 1000MWe units at Shin-Kori, north of Busan on the country’s east coast.
Contracts for the $5 billion project have already been awarded but disputes over incentives for nearby residents delayed approval for months. The plants will be of the Korean Standard Nuclear Plant Plus design which is based on Westinghouse’s System 80. Westinghouse will be providing components including those for instrumentation and control as well as technical and engineering expertise.
The units will take Korea’s total number of generating units to 20.
Ulchin 6, a 960MWe PWR, was connected to the grid on 8 December.
