Finland’s nuclear safety authority said it had found an isotope of uranium used in power reactors in ammunition from the 1999 Balkans conflict.
The finding by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) in a weapon head from Kosovo followed a similar discovery by the Swiss federal weapons laboratory in Spez. STUK said it found U-236 in a shell sent to its laboratory by a Finnish-led United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) mission to Kosovo, which is investigating the health risks of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition.
