Ukrainian nuclear utility Energoatom plans in 2018 to switch unit 3 at the South Ukraine NPP completely to the use of Westinghouse fuel, replacing fuel produced by Russia’s Tvel. The head of the nuclear safety at South Ukraine NPP, Sergei Povod, said on 15 August: “Some 75% of the core is now loaded with US fuel and next year we plan to completely transfer the third unit to this fuel”. He added that this year the first batch of Westinghouse fuel will also be loaded at unit 2 and complete transition to the new fuel is planned to be completed in four years. Unit 1 continues to use Russian fuel. In February 2016, Energoatom supplied the first batch of nuclear fuel to Westinghouse to Zaporizhye NPP, where currently it is used as part of a mixed core at unit 5 and is being prepared for loading into the core of unit 3.
