This year's series of general overhauls (GO) of the Mohovce NPP in Slovakia began on 27 March. The schedule envisages standard work, as well as implementation of large investment projects, which include increasing the efficiency of unit 1 by 7% and additional seismic protection. The work is complicated by anti-pandemic measures, the plant noted.
The main goal of the GO is to replace nearly a fifth of the fuel in the reactor and to carry out planned repairs and investment projects to increase safety. The overhaul will last about a month, but work on the 7% capacity increase will continue after the overhaul is completed.
The work include replacement of the turbine generator stator and unit transformer. In a similar way, Mocovce 2 was upgraded in late 2020.
During the first in the series of four planned overhauls this year – two at Bohunice NPP and two in Mocovce NPP – inspection of the reactor pressure vessel, emergency systems, technical water system, steam generators welds and other important components is planned. After the work is completed, power utility Slovenske elektrarne will verify the containment tightness of the plants.
“The shutdown schedule has been elaborated in detail, all conditions and tools are prepared so that we can perform every activity in a safe and smooth way, at the required quality, while adhering to strict anti-pandemic measures, said Mocovce NPP director Martin Mráz.
