Iberdrola has initiated safety tests at Cofrentes in a bid to win permission for a 5.8% power uprate, said a spokesman at the station. “We are testing different power levels for an uprate that will not require the installation of new equipment.” In March, Iberdrola applied for uprate permission from the nuclear safety council (CSN) to raise the station’s output from 1025.4MWe to 1085.4MWe. A spokesman at Cofrentes said that the total uprate costs had not yet been calculated.

CSN Commissioner Julio Barcelo Vernet said that CSN was likely to decide on the application in June.
