The US Department of Energy's (DOE’s) Office of Environmental Management and contractor Fluor Idaho have completed packaging a total of 7,485 cubic metres of exhumed hazardous and radioactive waste, satisfying a condition of a 2008 agreement between DOE, the state of Idaho and the US Environmental Protection Agency. The waste was generated at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons production plant and buried in an unlined Idaho landfill in the 1950s and 1960s. It was characterised and repackaged before shipping for disposal. The project to exhume the waste from the Subsurface Disposal Area is due to be completed in 2020 and is currently two years ahead of schedule.
