Westinghouse announced 8 April, that it intends to respond to the recent US Department of Energy funding opportunity to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
Last year, a Westinghouse/Ameren consortium applied for a similar grant for the 225MWe Westinghouse SMR, competing with three rival reactor consortia: Bechtel/B&W with the mPower reactor, Fluor/Nuscale wit the 45MW NuScale design and Holtec International with its SMR-160.
In November 2012, B&W’s mPower was selected in to receive the first portion of up to $452 million in SMR funding, which will be provided over five-years as part of a 50% cost-share agreement.
The second competition, launched in March, targets reactor designs planned to be operational by 2025, three years later than the last competition. Applications are due by 1 July 2013.
