Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) has developed a particulate air filter system using a stainless steel filter that can be cleaned in situ. It comprises of a filter assembly with vertically mounted sintered stainless steel plate and tube filters, spray wash nozzles, a liquid collection plenum with drain and a vacuum pump.
The filter is made from small, sintered steel particles bonded to form a thin sheet with submicron diameter micro-pores. A test using dioctyl phthalate aerosols showed the filter catches 99.99% of particles.
