Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is preparing to launch two tenders to implement the construction work of the Dabaa NPP in Egypt, according to Anatolos Kovatnov, the head of engineering work at the Dabaa project.
Rosatom is developing the 4800MWe El Dabaa NPP, which will be owned and operated by Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA) and which is expected to account for up to 50% of Egypt’s power generation capacity when completed. The plant will comprise four Generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors.
Kovatnov said last week that Rosatom has submitted all the documents required, and hopes to obtain the permits to establish the first unit of the Dabaa plant by 2020. Construction of unit 1 will start in July 2020 for operation in 2026; of unit 2 in January 2021 for in August 2026; of unit 3 in January 2022 for operation in August 2027; and of unit 4 in July 2022 for operation in February 2028.
Rosatom will train 2000 Egyptians to operate and maintain the plant, according to Yulia Sheinkovichka, head of Business Development at Rosatom Services.
Abdel Hamid al-Desouky, deputy chair of the NPPA, said that preparing all the documents required for the 4800MWe Dabaa for submission to the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA), will be finalized in January 2019. He added that all the documents would be reviewed within 18 months.
Kirill Komarov, first deputy director general for corporate development and international business at Rosatom, said that the participation rate of Egyptian companies in the first nuclear reactor at El Dabaa is expected to reach 20% and gradually increase to 30% for other units.
