The Battelle Memorial Institute has awarded UK based WS Atkins a Basic Ordering Agreement to provide services to the International Nuclear Safety Programme (INSP) in Central and Eastern Europe. The contract is effective for a five year period and covers work on the Soviet Designed Reactor Safety Programme, aimed at improving safety at 65 reactors in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Armenia and Ukraine; the Chernobyl shelter and shutdown/deactivation initiative; a core conversion initiative to eliminate the production of weapons grade plutonium at Soviet designed reactors; and a fuel fabrication technology initiative to help Ukraine lessen its dependence on Russia for its nuclear fuel supply.

WS Atkins is part of the STAR consortium led by Paul C Rizzo & Associates, which provides project management and specialist engineering and scientific services including technology transfer, safety assessments, operational safety management, training, engineering design and procurement, testing and commissioning.
