The University of Tokyo says it will cease operation of its research reactor Yayoi at the end of March 2011, four decades after it first went critical in April 1971.
In April 2008, the university entered into an agreement with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) on nuclear education and research. From now on, the two institutions will strengthen their cooperation further through the reciprocal use of facilities and equipment.
According to reports by the Japan Atomic Industry Forum (JAIF) the University of Tokyo and JAEA will cooperate through the development of smaller, popular neutron-beam and quantum-beam sources and their use, while jointly using a large research reactor, the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Center (J-PARC).
