The Spanish economics ministry said the country’s first nuclear power plant, José Cabrera, Zorita will close at the end of April 2006.
The announcement is in line with a recommendation to government last month by nuclear safety authority CSN to renew the plant’s operating licence for four years – meaning that it will close for good on 30th April 2006.
The plant’s owner, Unión Fenosa, originally applied for a licence extension of six years, which would have meant closing the 160MWe PWR in 2008. The reactor, which is situated in the north-east province of Guadalajara, was connected to the grid in July 1968.
The licences of Spanish nuclear units are renewed on an ongoing basis, often for periods of between two and ten years, depending on individual circumstances.
