Babcock International Group has acquired Bristol-based, Weir Strachan and Henshaw for £65m ($95m). BNS Nuclear Services will acquire the nuclear business while the other half of the company comprising the defence business is now being integrated into Babcock Marine.
The acquisition of Weir, Strachan and Henshaw by Babcock follows those of ALSTEC and INS in 2008. Managing Director of BNS, Martin Austick, commented: “The nuclear industry has seen growth in the last few years and we believe is now set to enter a phase of unprecedented growth. Our parent company believes we needed to grow by acquisition in order to benefit from the business generated by both accelerated decommissioning and the new generation of nuclear power stations.”
Earlier in March, BNS Nuclear Services won a £13m ($19m) open book contract from Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd. (DSRL) to provide maintenance and operations services in support of the decommissioning of the site’s two fast reactors. The contract is expected to run for three years, with an option to extend by up to two years.
